How often do you clean your line?

How often do you clean your line?
There are a number of reasons to clean and maintain your fly line with the best reason being to extend the life of what is a very expensive yet consumable piece of equipment. If you're trying to shoot line or even double haul having a line that guides effortlessly through the guides is a must. This pic demonstrates how much dirt and grime is picked up in just one trip to the water. So when was the last time that you cleaned your lines?

Re: How often do you clean your line?
I clean my lines but not enough, and you are right I can really feel the difference when my line gets dirty. it sticks and wont shoot at all. Not long ago at the Pechmann Center I was fish in the far trout pond and it was covered with that green bloom that it gets. After about 4 casts I had to move to the last pond where the water was clear cast and retrieve several times to get the gunk off. It was really bad I could not cast half way across the pond. So I will clean my lines much more often and dress them too.
Thanks for bringing this up Tom.

The following video describes how to thoroughly clean your line and recommends a thorough cleaning every couple of trips. I prefer to use Woolite as apposed to dishwashing detergent for all of the projects that require a mild cleaner.

Guess I don't clean mine often enough.
I usually pull mine line after cleaning between 2 anchor points for the line to dry, just tight enough to hold but not stretched. Then take some Armour All and wipe the line down. I leave it to dry good then wind back on the reel. The line really soars after the Armour All treatment.

Have never cleaned mine that I can remember. I think I need to do so quickly. Hopefully I'll be able to fly fish a bit more this year.

I'm very skeptical about using Armorall on my lines. There's alot of debate about whether it actually damages the line rather than preserving it. I believe that I have at all of the manufacturer's sites at this point and although the don't specifically mention Armorall, they do caution about allowing your line to come in contact with sunscreen, insect repelllent, and aerosols. These things remove the plastizers from the PVC coating.
BTW I also learned that Airflo is the only line made from polyureathane rather than pvc. They recommend cleaning their lines, but don't mention dressing.
I was looking for a defintive answer on the best dressing to use and I became intrigued with number of homebrew line dressings that included Armorall (which is very popular), 303 protectant, car wax and even Lemon Pledge . I won't say whether these are good or bad, but with the price of good fly line being what it is, I prefer not to take chance and will continue to dressings specifically designed for that purpose.

Insect repellants aren't good for any plactic type lures or for that matter any plastic. I had some Army insect repellent to melt my GI issue flashlight. That was a suprise. It melted the end cap where you replace the batteries. I had to take a knife and cut away the plastic to get inside.
I haven't had a problem so far with Armour All. I clean the line ever so often, but not often enough it seems. I clean, let dry and then AA. After its dry it does shoot thru the eyes very good. I don't have a lot of high end lines so guess till I get a definate answer Ill keep using it.
Let us know if you find anything else about protectants.
