A first for an Old Salt
Even us old timers still have our first in fishing and one of mine came, today. I did a little creek fishing and landed my first redbreast sunfish. I have to say that I was quite surprised at the amount of fight in these colorful little fish. I used a beetlespin on a 6ft spinning rod to appropriately toss the small lures. I have always considered the bluegill to be quite a catch on light gear. However, I now see why John Pechmann was fond of this species. In addition, I caught a few warmouthes which are quite a bulldog as well. From what I have been told that if you have a kayak or canoe you might want to think about hitting Big Rockfish Creek to try your luck with these guys.

I was out at Holland Lake this past weekend, tossing a beetle spin around with my small ultra light. And I agree, catching those little guys was alot of fun.

Where is Big Rock Fish Creek Tom? Wouldn't mind putting the kayak in and trying for the Red Breasted sunfish on the fly rod.
Re: A first for an Old Salt
It's my understanding that Big Rockfish Creek feeds Upchurches Lake and Little Rockfish Creek feeds Hope Mills Lake. The two meet south of Hope Mills where they flow to the Cape Fear.

I caught a warmouth and diddnt know it. I thought it was a monster gill. I have been wanting to go to rockfish read some reviews on it and it sounds wonderful according to trails.com the put in is at the bridge on 95 just south of the air port. I think this is the dirt road that heads down to the creek Gillespie Street / State Road 2273 / U.S. 301

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like major fun. Would a small jon boat with trolling motor be good for that area also?

thanks for the pics tom! Let me know if you ever want some company fishing the creek!
Re: A first for an Old Salt
@ coach. If it is anything like the lower little then a Jon boat would be a bad idea.
