"Twelve foot sturgeons possible in James River, according to two scientists snorkeled in the James River in downtown Richmond recently seeking evidence that submarine behemoths called Atlantic sturgeons are breeding in the city."

The James is not damned up like the Cape fear is and these fish can move way up into the fresh water to breed. This is good news for the endangered Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi).

In talking with a guy who works for the Corps of Engineers in SC, it sounds as though there is going to be a push in weir construction in a trade off for the expanding of harbors.  There are plans to construct weirs at dams on the Savannah river to accommodate the sturgeon.  Hopefully, there will also come a drive to construct weirs at lock 2 and 3 her on the Cape.
